Pedestrian Safety

Walking Safely

When walking for recreation or basic transportation, it is important to remain aware of your surroundings and to minimize your exposure to problems:
  • Walk on sidewalks; if this isn't possible, walk in the direction of oncoming traffic while avoiding cars
  • Never walk on or in train tracks, trolley tracks, or light rail tracks
  • Do not jay-walk or dash/run into a street
  • Cross streets and intersections at marked crosswalks and only after checking in both directions for traffic
  • Use extra caution while attempting to cross multiple lanes of traffic or higher speed streets
  • Obey all traffic signals; don't assume a car travelling on a green light will yield for you
  • Do not cross streets between parked cars
  • Do not display cash, jewelry, or electronics--leave these at home or safely stowed in pockets
  • Avoid carrying a purse while walking for recreation
  • Make eye contact with people who approach you; greet them with "hello"
  • For self-defense purposes, try to have keys in hand and a cell phone within easy reach while walking
  • If you're uncomfortable, cross the street or change direction; walk in the middle of the street, if safe to do so
  • If uneasy, enter a business or ask to join others and walk a short distance with them
  • If robbed, hand over property--your life and safety are more important!
  • If robbed or attacked, call 9-1-1 and promptly answer all questions and provide details--do not pursue suspect(s)
  • Avoid walking by cars that are turning, backing up, or pulling into or out of driveways
  • Avoid distraction while walking near or in intersections, corners, or driveways
  • Always hold your child's hand while crossing the street
  • Do not allow kids to play near traffic or cross the street by themselves
  • Wear reflective clothing/shoes when walking, jogging, or running at night; carry a flashlight when possible
  • Be sober--walking while intoxicated increases your chances of assault or injury
  • Allow extra time for vehicles to stop in snow, rain, and other foul weather conditions
